* Garden Diary

I have been wanting to have a written diary of the weather and snow fall; because we are Zone 4 our conditions are a little different. We are about a month behind the valley and this page is to help me keep track of OUR weather and growth.

July 4, 2014 - The Hill looks great.  New bark is laid, phase 1 has a nice green haze in the morning. Our first day open will be the 12th (Saturday). Did the OVOM farmers market and the wind broke my canopy and blew product everywhere.
July 2, 2014- Lavender on the hill have stems and bids, the base are just fattening up and getting color.  Royal Velvet by arbor is just budding out at base.  Coconut Ice is white, but no flowers. Temps are high, rain has forced Carli's Grosso to bud and lower ones fall.
June 27, 2014 - Hidcote in Carli's back yard cut for wedding at ONC in Ogden.
June 21, 2014 - Royal velvet in front yard at Carli's house cut for wedding.
Feb 14, 2014 - Happy Valentines Day!  The lavender are still covers in 4 feet of snow. Lots of rain, hoping the french drain still does it's job like last year.

May 1-5 -  Dad brought in bark for around the potting shed.  We wanted a fresh layer to set the "Lavender Babies" on in a few weeks.  Mom arranged the rocks on the upper ditch.  Dad buried the pipe in part of the ditch to people could walk up to phase 4.  Dad finished putting the large posts on the deck around the front of the gift shop.  So far we are not able to tell what has died and what survived the winter.  Another week of warm weather and we will know for sure.  It looks like we will be replacing 1/2 of our lavender plants.
April 13 - 4" of fresh snow last night.  8 to 10 head of deer in the yard last evening and fresh tracks in the snow this morning.  Max the Moose hasn't been around this winter.
April 11, 2012- Moved boulders for rock walls on phase 4.  Scrapped ditch along the top of phase 2.  Moved brush piles away from the Gazebo area.  The ground is still so damp the tractor tires are tearing the ground up.  Graded path through the trees on North side of the potting shed, scrapped out for the ditch to go through the path.
April 6, 2012 - Trimmed off 2" of dead stubble on the lavenders.  Looks like this winter was hard on most of the plants.  The lack of snow may have allowed the lavender to get frozen or suffer from frost damage.  We will try an experiment next fall with some frost cover to see if it helps.  Drug the harrow around the driveways to knock down ruts and level gravel. Re-potted the rest of the Grosso at Carli's house,  They are all looking good.
March, 5th 2012 - The sun was out and 55 degrees.  We set up Willard Bay Garden's display today.  The lavender are still under 1' of snow. My Dad trudged in his snow boots to the garden shed to pull out some pots.  Time to start thinking about new cuttings and "lavender babies".
Feb, 10th 2012 - Opened the Lavender Hill Gift Shop for Valentines Day.
Dec, 30th 2011 - Weather was in the mid 50's.  Spaced out Phase 4 with buckets.  Phase 4 will merge Phase 1 and 2.
Dec, 5-10th - Opened the Lavender Hill Gift Shop. for a week of Holiday shopping.
Oct, 1st - The mornings are cold with a little frost.  The carport is about done.  The rock on the lower part of the house is about done. The back patio needs to be painted.  All of the lavender has been harvested except for 2 Grosso plants so Carli can make a few more wands.
Sept - Extracted 2 gallons of honey from the hives.  Lavender honey is not far off.
Sept  - Rented the post hole digger to drill the holes for the lavender around the gazebo area. Drilled 30 more holes including the ones up the road way for more Royal Velvet.
Sept - Laid the drip line for Phase 3.  Dug out the walk path to the bee hives.
Sept - Hot days cold nights, little rain. Used the tractor and filled the trenches with good soil.
Sept - Poured cement for the carport beams.  Used the tractor to dig out the 16 x 16 flat for the gazebo.

Aug, 8th, 2001 - First U-pick day of the season. Grosso is in full bloom.
Aug 2nd, 2011 - Rain storms came through and laid the lavender down.  It has perked up, but has forced the Hidcote to burst open a little early.  They still have great color and will work great for wreaths.
July 26th, 2011 - Sunset at Lavender Hill, Grosso is just about ready to start picking.
July 22nd, 2011 - Cut Hidcote and Coconut Ice to make lavender wreaths with Lyle.
July  13th, 2011 - Grosso stems are showing color and swaying in the wind.
July, 4th, 2011 - The weather is warming up.  The green foliage is filling in.
July 1st, 2011 - Poppy got a new honey bee colony today.  We have started to rock the house.  Lavender plants are perking up.

June 26th, 2011 - This entire month has gone by in a flash.  The weather has warmed up.  Summer showers and warmer days have kicked the weeds into hyper-drive.  We have spent this month weeding.  The plants are perking up.  The stems are showing and measure about 8".  Compared to last year we are still a month behind.
June 1st, 2011 - Dad trimmed the black berries and worked on the deck.  Mom cut out the dead on Phase One. I restocked the Ogden gift shops. Mom said that at least one plant on each row died.
May 26th, 2011 - We are bumping all of our "Lavender Babies" to the next pot size this week.  100 down, 600 more to go.  Rain every other day.  Dad worked on Phase 3 with the tractor extending a few of the trenches.
May 21-23, 2011 - More heavy rain, but it is warm.  The ground is warm. the plants are sending up about 1" of new green growth.  We are just about ready to go in and cut out anything dead. Dad put the window in the garden shed.  Mom planted thyme between the flagstone in front of the gift shop.
May 17th, 2011 - Rain mixed with snow showers. The plants perked up with last week's warmth.

May 14th, 2011 - Sun and strong winds all weekend.  Huntsville under flood watch. Weber river is at 5.0 (which calculates out to so many hundred cubic feet per second, anything above 4.6 is above the flood ratings).
May 13th, 2011 - Hard frost during the night.  Dad Mowed the lawn and worked on the trail behind the swing.  Mom planted 2 English Lavender next to the pond. Water in Phase 3 trenches is clear. Yellow orchid wild flowers blooming.
May 12th, 2011 -  It is supposed to be 70 degrees this weekend.  I am hoping everything dries out.  Sunny DaysMay 8-11th, 2011 - Rain all week, I am a little worried about the plants being susceptible to mold.
April, 2011- Hard frost last night.  The snow is gone which means they are not insulated.  The frost is killing the plants in areas.
April 20th, 2011- Phase 3 trenches are full of water. 3 plants on the east side of the green house are under water.  Little rivers are all over the property.  Sunshine & Water.
April 19th, 2011- The snow is melted off zone 1, 2 and parts of 3
April 14th, 2011 -  The snow is still around.  They say that this year will be like 1983.  To much snow, flooding and a late spring.  Winter Melting Away.
